Mandate The Committee examines individual complaints; discusses the human rights situation at home and abroad; and liases with lobby groups.
Membership The sub-committee consists of 7 members, three senators and four deputies.
Working methods Lobby groups communicate with the Sub-Committee and they influence agendas. All meetings are public. The Sub-Committee invites government officials to participate in its work but does not summon them. Annual reports are issued.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Sub-Committee reports to and seeks the approval of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs.
Relations with external bodies The Sub-Committee works with NGOs and invites them to attend or be present at its meetings
Subjects dealt with The death penalty in the USA and disability rights in Ireland. In 2008, the sub-committee discussed about human rights priorities for 2009, Roma families in Kosovo, international business and human rights, elections in Russia and the situation in Tibet.
